Mazzarino's Italian Ristorante
12920 1/2 Riverside Drive
Sherman Oaks, CA. 91423
818-788-5050
|
World War II was raging in Europe and business was booming in Studio City, California. Mazzarino's opened on the corner of Coldwater Canyon and Ventura Boulevard. The original owners played host to the likes of Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mercer, Liberace and Mario Lanza. They loved the food and cozy, club-lounge atmosphere. They would often stay until well after closing with their intriguing and glamorous friends.
In the mid 1950's, Mazzarino's re-opened on Riverside Drive, this time as a small pizzeria-style cafe. It became available for sale in the early 1990's and new owner Liz Versten knew she had a rare gem. They served the usual, eggplant and chicken parmigiana, linguine and clams, veal scaloppini, pizzas and pastas. "I know what tastes good," said the sparkling Liz. With her engaging personality and Chicago sensibility, the place has been hopping since she took over in 1993.
In addition to the exquisite menu, diners enjoy fine imported Italian beers and imported Italian wines. The interior takes you back to New York in the mid 20th century and the food takes you to heaven! Favorite dishes are cioppino and veal chops - and of course, all of the pastas for dinner and for lunch, the Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches with sweet or hot peppers.

Come to the famous Miceli's Italian Restaurant in
Hollywood and Universal City, home of the singing
waiters and waitresses. We will serenade you with
Italian arias, musical show tunes, classical standards....
all while you dine.
Miceli's was established in 1949, when Carmen and
Sylvia Miceli gathered together their meager funds
and, joined by sisters Angie and Millie and brothers
Tony and Sammie, opened Miceli's Pizzaria -- Hollywood's
first pizza house.
Using family recipes brought from Sicily via Old Chicago,
the Miceli's had people lined up and down the block,
savoring their opportunity to feast with the Miceli
family.
Throughout the years, Miceli's in Hollywood and its
sister location in Universal City, have drawn dignitaries
and celebrities galore. People from JFK and Richard
Nixon and the Beatles to today's stars like Jim Carrey,
Adam Sandler, and Julia Roberts. What brings people
back, besides the terrific food, is the unique atmosphere
and super-friendly service, not to mention the live
entertainment.
An evening at Miceli's is more than a night out, it

www.philippes.com

Established in 1908 by French immigrant named Philippe Mathieu. Philippe the Original began as a delicatessen and sandwich shop. In 1918, Philippe was preparing a sandwich for a policeman and accidentally dropped the sliced french roll into the drippings of a roasting pan. The policeman liked the sandwich and came back the next day with some friends to order the sandwich "dipped" in the meat pan. From that day forward, a new sandwich was born--the "French Dip," so called because of Philippe's French heritage, the french roll on which the sandwich was made, or because the policeman's name was Officer French.
In 1927, Mathieu sold Philippe the Original to Harry, Dave, and Frank Martin (believed to have been sold for around $5,000) and today the restaurant is owned and operated by descendants of the same family--the Binder and Downey families.

It has been in the same location for 62 years. It
is not unusual to see a Rolls Royce pull up to Pink's

struggling musicians, businessmen, housewives, school

Sam's
By The Beach
This
cozy beachside restaurant, once a clandestine neighborhood
eatery has become a destination dining spot. The location
is a big plus, (a sea breeze away from the Pacific
Ocean) the food is great and the atmosphere is elegant,
yet comfortable. Owner Samer "Sam" Elias said "I try
to develop a relationship with each client, going
so far as to know them all by name. Service is all
about knowing your client and being able to cater
to their needs."
The
cuisine is Californian/Mediterranean with an emphasis
on quality ingredients. The menu is seasonal and changes
four times per year. " I enjoy going to the Central
Market each day to plan my menus and keep me in touch
with what is fresh " said Sam.
At
Sam's By The Beach you can enjoy a martini - they
have a full bar, or you can indulge in wine from a
diverse selection of California wines as well as international
wines from France, Italy, New Zealand and Spain. Sam
said "I like to feature wines from small producers
with high quality vintages at reasonable prices that
compliment food."
Local
celebrity diners include Blythe Danner.
