Girl Power!
You see it on tee shirts, you've heard it from the Spice Girls
and can see the grown-up girls on Sex & The City talk
about it. Here is some food for thought - share it at your
next power lunch. Girl Power is "in," and this is what successful
women have to say about it.
WHOOPIE
GOLDBERG "It's about what you think you should be doing.
I couldn't change - this is what I was going to be. It's all
right to be an individual. Also, I just sold a project about
women's health to Lifetime. I want us to talk about issues
that stick, whether they are popuIar or politically correct."
PHYLLIS
DILLER At 83, Phyllis Diller still packs a powerful comic
punch. She started her career at 37 after raising five children.
"All of my ex-husbands are named Fang - it's less confusing."
About girl power? "Women are no longer lost, with the exception
of Amelia Earhart And by the way, why would anyone name a
luggage after a woman who's still lost?" The comedienne is
a fabulous cook: "I love elephant gailic and use it regularly."
The kitchen in her Brentwood, California home is designed
for entertaining. She is also an accomplished concert pianist.
CHER
The entertainer looks like a beautiful porcelain doll, but
she's not fragile. "If you're stupid, I'm difficult, if you're
smart, I'm easy," she quips about what it's like to work with
her. She loves power babe Bette Davis and watches All About
Eve once a month. About the weaker sex? "I love men; God
knows I do. They're just not quite as good as we are. Look
at it this way, we can wear pants and a dress. Really, I like
to make women feel great, we can direct a movie and shake
a baby at the same time." Shall we make her put a dollar in
the kitty for male bashing? Maybe not, she's just looking
out for future generations of females: "A lifetime of learning
should be passed on. After all, Ginger Rogers had to do it
backwards and in heels."
AMY
BRENNEMAN of Judging Amy. Amy's mom is also known
as Judge Brenneman. She was in the first graduating class
at Harvard Law to admit women and the second woman to get
a judgeship in Connecticut in 1967. On a personal note, Amy's
parents were the first couple at Harvard Law to get married
in '51."That's the better statistic,"she says.
SHARON
STONE "Take what you feel in your heart, make it practically
available in the world and provide a thoughtful voice."
MELANIE
GRIFFITH "We are all goddesses, and it is women who are
responsible for changing women. Most of us were not taught
to think big - to think business. A woman of 40 is just beginning
to realize her full potential."
